Kihefo HIV/AIDS Clinic

KIHEFO’s HIV/AIDs Clinic has registered over 3,400 females and 1,900 males on care. At the clinic patients are treated for opportunistic infections, receive ARVs when appropriate, and are provided with HIV/AIDS counseling and social support.

Project
In cooperation with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Inter-Religious Council for Uganda, KIHEFO was able to establish a more thorough prevention and outreach program for HIV/AIDs. This program, which was officially conducted from 2007-2008, included community sensitization and education on HIV/AIDS prevention in 20 sub-counties of Kabale district. Sensitization programs include those that focus on making communities more knowledgeable and therefore responsible about the spread of HIV/AIDs.
In this project, 1261 youth, from 13 organized youth groups, who participated in peer discussion on topics such as HIV/AIDs prevention and issues with drug abuse. 23,586 individuals (13,294 males and 11,292 females) attended educational films, which were shown in either the local language (the Runyangloe Rukiga dialect) or translated. 1,622 people living with HIV/AIDs (454 males and 1,168 females) were educated on how to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDs in the Kabale district. Through this program, we discovered that females are more open than males when dealing with their HIV/AIDs status and testing.
When KIHEFO started the HIV/AIDs prevention and sensitization project, the number of people who had already disclosed their HIV status was 760(198 males and 562 females). After one year, that number increased to 2,122 (454 males and 1,168 females). While this is quite an accomplishment, Kabale district has an estimated number of 35,000 people living with HIV/AIDs.
The project received an overwhelming amount of demand in the Kabale district communities. Even though the HIV/AIDs Prevention and Sensitization project is complete, there is still need for many of these services to continue. The majority of community members believe that KIHEFO should continue to bring services closer to people in their villages. These individuals also believe KIHEFO should continue to promote and improve HIV/AIDs Counseling & Testing, support fidelity among married couples through the Faith House approach, and campaign for HIV prevention among people living with HIV/AIDs. The KIHEFO HIV/AIDs clinic continues to operate in Kabale, and conducts village outreaches (link) to test and educate communities. The HIV/AIDs Prevention and Sensitization Project has had great influence on the approach of the KIHEFO clinic which will continue to listen to demands of community members and attempt to improve its services accordingly.
Accreditation
KIHEFO received accreditation from Ministry of Health Uganda as one of the centers to administer antiretroviral therapy. This is one of the main services rendered at the AIDS clinic.
